Academic life

My first scientific result was the developing of the prototype of the optical system simulatorOptSim during my master Thesis in 1995 at Politecnico di Torino, Italy (PoliTO in the following). My work prosecuted within the PhD program modeling optical fiber effects and covering the position of scientific adviser for the spinoff company Artis that acquired OptSim from PoliTO and developed and distributed it until 2002. Thanks to the scholarship “Ercole de Castro”, I was visiting researcher at the Stanford University with the group of Prof. Kazovsky (fall to spring quarters, 1997-98), and at the University of California, Santa Barbara, with the group of Prof. Blumenthal (summer quarter 1998).

From 1999 to 2003, I was a post-doc at PoliTO, and in 2004 I became Assistant Professor. In 2003, thanks to an award for innovations, I established the spinoff company ATS srl that was operative until 2009 and where I served as member of the board and the CEO.

Besides the activities in the spinoff company, I prosecuted the research works at PoliTO participating to several research projects and contracts with local responsibilities and publishing several well accepted papers, testified by the bibliometric parameters, relevant for the field. In 2014, I became Associate Professor at DET of PoliTO. In 2014 and in 2015, I received the award for the best paper on the IEEE/OSA Journal of lightwave technologies.

In addition to the scientific activities described so far, I have covered primary roles in management of Politecnico di Torino. In 2007-2013, I have been a member of the Board of Directors of PoliTO, and, among many other tasks, contributed to draw up the new statute of PoliTO. During the same period I was member of the committee of PoliTO for technological transfer. Starting from 2013, I’m coordinating of the PoliTO specializing master in “Future broadband networks” and I’m a member of the executive committee of the “School of specializing master” of PoliTO.

Private life

I live in Caluso, a country village 30 km north of Torino and I love open air life. I practice trail running, cross-country ski and ski-mountaineering. I like cinema and visual arts in general. I’m interested in popular culture with special regard to the one characterizing my area of origins – the Canavese – but also the Anglo-Saxon literature and pop culture in general of the last 60 years.
